Team Selection

Olicana enters teams for various competitions, notably the Yorkshire League. This involves teams of eight players. Other competitions are available for teams of four.

Responsibility for team selection – and assignment of players into teams – lies with the Selection Committee, in consultation with Team Captains (see below)

  1. Eligibility and Principles
    • Any fully paid member of the club is eligible for selection in a team.
    • Members volunteer themselves in the first instance. They may put themselves forward as individuals, or in pairs or teams. If as pairs or teams, there can be no guarantee that, if selected, they would be in that arrangement, though that would be preferred
    • Individuals, pairs, or teams may under no circumstances specify with whom they are willing or not to form a team. Attempting to make such a requirement may result in becoming ineligible for selection.
    • All candidates must be willing to abide by YCBA requirements
    • No one who puts their name forward necessarily has a right to be selected
  2. Process
    • The Selection Committee advertises in an email to all members that team volunteers are required. The email shall state:-
      • The number of teams and players being sought
      • The number (and possible schedule) of matches to be held
      • The number (and possible schedule) of training events to be held
      • A reminder that all members are eligible for selection, and may put themselves forward as individuals, pairs, or teams, with a note on how to do so (See c below)
      • A deadline by which responses are required
    • A copy of this mail shall be put up on the club website
    • A form containing all this information shall also be put on the Club notice board for members to sign.
    • Members should volunteer preferably via email sent to the Selection Committee , and copied to the Club Secretary. The candidate should also indicate any dates on which they are unavailable. If a member volunteers via the notice board, an email to this effect to the Captain and secretary should be sent
    • The Selection Committee  will then select a Team Captain for each projected team from among those who have put their name forward
    • The Selection Committee  and the Team Captains will then work together to assign candidates to teams. If there is a disagreement among the Selection Committee  and Team Captains, the majority view will be taken; if there is no majority, the Selection Committee  shall decide.
    • Selection and assignment to teams shall be based primarily on assessed skill level (Practicality, such as transport to away matches may influence team assignment)
    • Selection and assignment to teams may vary through the programme of matches, because of factors such as availability and individual performance.
    • If necessary, selection matches between candidates can be arranged
    • Only if there are insufficient candidates to fill the team places can the Captains approach club members who have not volunteered in accordance with this procedure
    • A member who has volunteered but has not been selected is put on a list of available substitutes. (Only if none of those on the list is not available when required can a Captain approach club members who have not properly volunteered)
    • In cases of dispute, Captains can ask for their selections to be ratified by the Club Chair who may seek advice from other members.
    • The decision on teams and selection, once made by the Captains in accordance with this process, is final.
